Dr Keith Burns has been a GP and EMIS user since his first post at a practice in Wolverhapton in 2002. This was a busy inner city practice with EMIS LV which then migrated to PCS. It was very much a paper-light practice and was scanning from an early stage. At the practice he introduced templates, short cuts, macros and even experimented with protocols.
When he decided to move up to his native Scotland and out to the Isle of Lewis, he was recruited bhy a practice wanted to use his experience to migrate from GPASS to EMIS. He spent a year with the GPASS system before return to his beloved EMIS PCS, and it seemed like the return of an old friend!
The Western Isles Health Board has now moved completely away from GPASS and is, with Keith as GP IT lead, looking towards the benefits of EMIS Web. He also works for the board as GP prescribing lead using the formulary to try to guide good and cost-effective prescribing.
Outside work, Keith enjoys the beauty of the landscape around Stornoway, going to the gym, swimming, visiting the cinema when there is a film on in town, or he escapes to the city.
He hopes to support Sara Hornibook representing Scotland, which has a growing number of EMIS users, on the committee and supporting the development of EMIS Web, using the system always to help with the job of looking after patients, which he sees as a system's primary aim.
